Statement, 3491 Corporal E.G. CHAPLIN, 55th Bn, 22 July 1916: 'I got as far as the 3rd line of German trenches in the charge last Wednesday, July 19th, and this man got there too, and there we stayed until we were forced to retire. I saw this man killed by a high explosive shell, and I afterwards saw him lying dead. I got his paybook before we retired.'

Note on file: 'German death list dated 4.11.16. Disc received from Germany and forwarded to N/K. 20.6.17.'

Originally listed as 'No Known Grave' and commemorated at V.C. Corner (Panel No 11), Australian Cemetery, Fromelles; subsequently (2011) identified, and interred in the Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery, France.
