Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 4 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19/20 July 1916'. Statement, Red Cross File No 171001 , 1687 Pte M.B. KIRWAN, 54th Bn (patient, St John's Hospital, Etaples), 5 December 1916: '[2978] Pte. [W.] Sloane, of B. Coy since wounded and probably in hospital, told me that he saw Backhouse wounded in the German line on July 20th. He told me that a S/B [Stretcher Bearer] of the R.A.M.C. dressed his wound.'
