Disembarked Suez, 16 December 1915. Found guilty, 22 January 1916, of being absent from 2 pm parade: awarded forfeiture of 1 day's pay.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 17 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 23 June 1916. On command, Lewis Gun School, 29 October 1916; rejoined Bn, 8 November 1916. Appointed Lance Corporal, 18 April 1917. To 5th Army Summer Rest Camp, 27 May 1917; rejoined Bn, 20 June 1917.

Wounded in action,12 October 1917 (gun shot wound, scalp), and admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 10th Casualty Clearing Station, 12 October 1917; by 29th Ambulance Train to 11th Stationary Hospital, Rouen, 13-14 October 1917; to England, 19 October 1917, and admitted to Voluntary Aid Hospital, Cheltenham, 21 October 1917. Transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 8 January 1918. Granted furlough, 16-30 January 1918, to report to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth.

Commenced return to Australia from Devonport on board 'Durham Castle', 10 March 1918,for discharge (gun shot wound, head; headache; senile); disembarked Perth; discharged Perth, 20 May 1918.
