Admitted to Fovant Military Hospital, 19 November 1916 (mumps); discharged from hospital, 2 December 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 30 December 1916; marched in to 5th Australian Division Base Depot, Etaples, 31 December 1916. Found guilty, 1 February 1917, of (1) breaking out of camp; (2) trespassing on cultivated lands: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2. Taken on strength, 58th Bn, in the field, 7 February 1917. Appointed Lance Corporal, 20 June 1917; promoted Corporal, 24 August 1917; promoted Sergeant, 4 October 1917.
