War service: Egypt, Western Front Admitted to No 2 Stationary Hospital, Tel el Kebir, 19 May 1916 (not yet diagnosed); discharged, 21 May 1916 (no further details recorded). Embarked Alexandria, 6 June 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 16 June 1916. Found guilty, 12th Training Bn, Codford, 9 November 1916, of (1) breaking camp; (2) being absent without leave from 0630, 6 November, till 1245, 8 November 1916 (3 days): awarded 10 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeiture of a total of 13 days' pay. Proceeded overseas to France, 4 February 1917; jointed 46th Bn, in the field, 12 February 1917. Wounded in action, 16 February 1917, and admitted to 12th Australian field Ambulance; transferred same day to 1/1 South Midland Casualty Clearing Station (shrapnel wound, head). Died of wounds, 21 February 1917. Statement, Red Cross File No 1230602E, Sister-in-charge, 1/1 South Midland Casualty Clearing Station, France, 31 March 1917: 'Pte. D.I. [sic] Gunn was admitted on the 15th.2.17. wounded by shell in the Head [sic] and he died on the 21st. His mother was written to at once. He left no messages and the end was peaceful.'
