Embarked Melbourne, 1 April 1916; disembarked Suez, Egypt. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 28 May 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 4 June 1916; taken on strength, 7th Bn, 29 July 1916.

Wounded in action, 18 August 1916 (bayonet wound, shoulder), and admitted to 2nd Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station; to 1st Canadian General Hospital, Etaples, 21 August 1916; to No 6 Convalescent Depot, Etaples, 15 September 1916; to 1st Australian division Base Depot, 28 September 1916; rejoined unit, Belgium, 29 September 1916.

On leave to United Kingdom, 27 August 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 14 September 1917.

Wounded in action, 20 September 1917 (shrapnel wound, legs, chest, neck), and admitted to 10th Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to 83rd General Hospital, Boulogne, 23 September 1917; transferred to England, 7 October 1917, and admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, King's Heat, 8 October 1917 (shrapnel wound, left side: severe); transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 3 January 1918.
