Proceeded overseas to France, 29 September 1916; marched into 2nd Divisional Base Depot, Etaples, 2 October 1916; moved into the field, 22 November 1916; taken on strength of 26th Bn, 25 November 1916.

Found guilty in the field, 8 January 1917, of being absent without leave, 9.00 am, 20 December, to 29 December 1916: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2; forfeited total of 38 days' pay.

Admitted to 8th Australian Field Ambulance, 16 May 1917 (gun shot wound, shattered right hand); transferred to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station, 16 May 1917; to Ambulance Train '29', 30 May 1917; to 11th Stationary Hospital, Rouen, 31 May 1917 (amputated right forearm). Proceeded to England on HS 'St David', 5 June 1917; admitted to 3rd Southern General Hospital, 5 June 1917; discharged on furlough, 26 June 1917, to report to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 10 July 1917.

Found guilty, 18 July 1917, of being absent without leave, 3.30 pm, 10 July, until apprehended, 9.45 pm, 15 July 1917: admonished by superior officer; forfeited total of 6 days' pay; by sworn declaration assumed true name of John Joseph Halligan, 17 August 1917.

Found guilty at Southall, 22 August 1917, of being absent without leave, 10.00 pm, 19 August, to 12.00 pm, 21 August 1917: admonished by superior officer; forfeits total of 3 days' pay. Found guilty at Southall, 9 October 1917, of being absent without leave, 10.00 pm, 12 September, to 8.00 pm, 8 October 1917: awarded fine of 7 days' pay; forfeited total of 34 days' pay; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 13 October 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on HT 'Themistocles', 5 November 1917; disembarked Sydney, 3 January 1918, and thence overland to 1st Military District.

Found drowned in Sandy Creek, Enoggera, 13 March 1918; buried in Toowong Cemetery, Brisbane, 15 March 1918.
