'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the advance was held up and his officer had become a casualty, he brought two guns into ac tion in front of the infantry, and protected the flank under heavy fire until the advance was renewed. He also held up an enemy attacking party at a critical moment, using a captured enemy gun. He showed exceptional skill and determination.'
