'At POZIERES, FRANCE from 17th. to 21st. August 1916 Private HEMPEL showed conspicuous bravery throughout our stay in the trenches. As a stretcher bearer for 7th Battalion with Private TRINDER, he continuously carried wounded through heavy barrages of fire, working from our strong point N.E. of POZIERES (a distance of 75 yards from the enemy), where for 50 yards along the trenches he was fully exposed to the enemy's fire. When Private TRINDER was wounded, Private HAMPEL continued to work by himself, bandaging wounded in No Mans Land and carrying them in.'
