Military Medal Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 76 Date: Bar to Military Medal 'During the operations on MT. ST. QUENTIN near PERONNE on 1st September, 1918, Private HERMAN was a Stretcher Bearer, and throughout he displayed a courage and devotion to duty that were admirable. Again and again he went out into an inferno of machine gun and shell fire, and collected casualties, dressed them, and carried them to the rear. He worked unremittingly and ceased only when all casualties had been removed from the field. At FRAMERVILLE on August 18th this man's Company came under a very severe "Five-nine" bombardment, and suffered casualties. HERMAN at once set to work, and with conspicuous courage and energy dug out two men who had been buried, and attended to their wounds. He then helped to carry them to the rear.'
