Joined 14th Bn at Gallipoli, 13 November 1915. Disembarked Alexandria ex Mudros, 1 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation).

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 1 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 8 June 1916.

Admitted to No. 3 Stationary Hospital, Amiens, 19 December 1916, suffering from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. Court of Inquiry, 19 December 1916, found that all the men involved were ignorant of the dangers of brazier fumes in an enclosed place. Transferred to England, 5 January 1917; admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, 6 January 1917. Discharged, 15 January 1917, and granted furlough, to report to No. 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, 30 January 1917.

Admitted to Rochester Hospital, 28 January 1917; discharged, 19 March 1917. Total period of treatment for venereal disease: 51 days. Admitted to No. 1 Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford, 27 March 1917; discharged, 20 April 1917. Total treatment for venereal disease: 25 days.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Port Darwin', 11 January 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 4 March 1918; discharged, 5 April 1918.
