'For gallantry and devotion to duty during Operations at BRAY on night 23rd/24th August and CLERY-sur-SOMME on night 31st August/1st September, 1918. On the night of 23rd/24th August, Battalion moved forward to positions North of BRAY, 'A' Company forming a defensive flank with British troops on left and 38th Battalion on right. Our positions were very exposed and we were subjected to heavy shelling for 18 hours. Corporal HOGAN held a small post in a particularly bad position and in spite of casualties held on all day, keeping up communication with posts on his flanks throughout. His coolness was acknowledged by his section to have kept them together through a trying day. On the night of August 31st/1st September "A' Company moved up and established a line of outposts behind BOUCHAVESNES Road. Lance Corporal HOGAN went out to the right to get touch with 40th Battalion. He stayed out for over an hour, close to enemy posts and often under heavy Machine Gun fire. He was successful in carrying out his work under great difficulties. This Non Commissioned Officer has repeatedly distinguished himself during the present advance for daring and steadiness under fire and his conduct throughout has been a fine example to the men under him.'
