Embarked from Melbourne, 20 October 1916; transferred at Sierra Leone, West Africa, to HT 'Willochra', 4 November 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 29 December 1916. Marched in to 10th Training Bn, 29 December 1916.

Proceeded overseas to France, 28 March 1917; taken on strength, 38th Bn, 12 April 1917.

Wounded in action, 7 June 1917, and admitted to 7th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 7 June 1917; to 2nd Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne, 8 June 1917 (gas poison shell); to 3rd Convalescent Depot, Le Treport, 3 July 1917; to 16th General Hospital, Le Treport, 20 July 1917; to 3rd Convalescent Depot, 10 August 1917; discharged to Base Depot, 15 August 1917; rejoined unit at the front, 8 September 1917.

On leave to England, 18 February 1918; rejoined unit, 8 March 1918. Found guilty, 21 March 1918, of while on active service being absent without leave in that he overstayed leave from 12 midnight, 7 March, till 10 am, 8 March 1918: awarded 14 days Field Punishment No. 2; forfeited 4 days pay.

Proceeded to Australian General Base Depot, 17 February 1919; marched in to Overseas Training Brigade, England, 1 March 1919.
