Embarked Alexandria on HMT 'Scotion' and proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force, 9 May 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 18 May 1916; taken on strength of 2nd Australian Divisional Base Depot, 5 June 1916; joined 21st Bn in the field, 4 August 1916.

Admitted to Corps Clearing Station, 25 August 1916 (shell shock); rejoined unit from hospital, 1 September 1916.

Found guilty in the field, 9 September 1916, of being absent without leave: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2.

Admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance, 9 November 1916; transferred to 1st General Hospital, Etretat, 11 November 1916; discharged to duty, 19 November 1916; marched into 2nd Divisional Base Depot, Etaples, 21 November 1916; rejoined unit in the field, 26 November 1916.

Found guilty in the field, 14 December 1916, of drunkenness, 10 December 1916: awarded fine of 10 shillings.

Wounded in action, 3 May 1917; admitted to 12th General Hospital, Rouen, 5 May 1917. Embarked Rouen on HS 'Aberdonian' and proceeded to England for further treatment, 24 May 1917; admitted to 3rd Southern General Hospital, Oxford, 26 May 1917 (slight gun shot wound, thighs); transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 11 July 1917; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 1 August 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on HT 'New Zealand' for change, 27 August 1917; disembarked Melbourne, 22 October 1917. Discharged on account of wounds sustained in action, 28 November 1917.
