'This man displayed great coolness and courage in the attack and during the occupation of HINDENBURG LINE East of BULLECOURT on April 11th 1917. The enemy were bringing heavy fire to bear on our trenches and a volunteer was called for to remove a ranging board in front. This man volunteered and going out over the top in the face of rifle fire removed the board and returned to our lines. His work deserves special praise.'
