'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 29th September near BELLICOURT when his company came under heavy Machine Gun fire from an enemy strong post he displayed the greatest courage and initiative in dealing with the situation. He led a party of bombers and Lewis Gunners and by skilful leadership worked his party round the post and drove off the enemy-inflicting severe casualties and capturing two Machine guns. by his boldness and initiative at a critical period he secured the flank of the Battalion and enabled the advance to continue.'
