'At TREUX near ALBERT on 10th June, 1918, during the successful attack by the 7th A.I. Brigade, after three men had failed to get back through the enemy barrage, this man volunteered and succeeded in carrying the message back from his section Officer to Company Headquarters a distance of 1,000 yards, through a very heavy artillery and Machine Gun fire. During the whole of the attack, he showed great coolness and courage, setting a fine example to his comrades.'
