'On the 2nd September 1918 these two men [LEE and 4481 P.L. McKELVIE], during the attack near PERONNE were engaged on line maintenance duty. They were stationed on lines forward of the Brigade Forward Station. As the attacking troops reached their objective, they laid and maintained lines to Battalions. On the evening of the 3rd instant, the area through which the lines were laid was again intensely shelled with H.E. and gas shells; but Sapper McKelvie and Private Lee worked continuously for many hours in the darkness wearing their box respirators, and restored communication again and again. They displayed a standard of courage of the highest order. Through their perseverance, good communication was effected throughout the period.'
