Military Medal 'On 1st September 1918 during the attack on PERONNE, as a Runner attached to advanced Battalion Headquarters, he displayed conspicuous bravery, tireless energy and devotion to duty. On five different occasions he succeeded with the utmost despatch in delivering important messages to Company Commanders in very forward positions. On each occasion he had to pass through an intense shell and Machine Gun barrage and always succeeded in bringing back valuable information obtained through his own personal observation regarding the progress of the attack. On 2nd September 1918 during the resumption of the attack he repeatedly carried messages to the front line, successfully negotiating intense shell and Machine Gun fire. His coolness, courage and energy were remarkable. In spite of the fact that he was weary from want of sleep and the effects of gas, and I cannot speak too highly of his splendid work. I very strongly recommend this man for the Military Medal.'
