Found guilty in Durrington, 27 June 1917, of being absent without leave, 1.00pm, 11 June, until surrendering to police in Dublin, 4.40 pm, 18 June 1917: awarded 8 days' Field Punishment No 2; forfeited total of 24 days' pay. Found guilty at Durrington, 26 September 1917, of failing to obey an order, 22 September 1917: awarded 7 days' confinement to barracks. Proceeded to France through Southampton, 6 November 1917; marched into 3rd Australian Divisional Base Depot, Rouelles, 7 November 1917; moved into the field, 10 November 1917; taken on strength of 38th Bn, 18 November 1917.

Admitted to 10th Australian Field Ambulance, 12 June 1918, and transferred to 12th Casualty Clearing Station (sprained left ankle); to 1st General Hospital, 15 June 1918; discharged to Australian Infantry Base Depot, Rouelles, 13 July 1918. Transferred to 5th Divisional Train, 18 July 1918, and taken on strength, 25 August 1918; posted to 18th Company Australian Army Supply Corps, 25 August 1918.

Admitted to 14th Australian Field Ambulance, 21 October 1918, and transferred to 3rd Australian General Hospital, Abbeville (dysentery); discharged to duty, 4 November 1918; rejoined unit from hospital, 5 November 1918; moved out from the field, 6 December 1918.
