Military Medal 'For gallantry and devotion to duty near VILLERS BRETONNEUX on 3rd May, 1918. When nothing was known of the situation on the left, he went out alone through a murderous machine gun fire and established communication. As the party to which he belonged advanced Private MASON went forward and reconnoitred the position and then led a party and cleaned up an enemy post which he had located. He showed great coolness and initiative throughout and his disregard of personal safety and his gallant bearing were magnificent and an inspiration to his comrades.'
