Admitted to 2nd Casualty Clearing Station, Ferry Post, Canal Zone, 3 February 1916 (pneumonia); transferred to 1st Australian Stationary Hospital, Ismailia; to Base, 11 February 1916; to No 2 Australian General Hospital, Heliopolis, 14 February 1916; discharged from hospital, 25 March 1916.

Embarked Alexandria, 28 May 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 6 June 1916. Marched out from No 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, to 6th Training Bn, Larkhill, 5 December 1916. Found guilty, 7 January 1917, of neglect of duty: awarded 5 days confined to camp.

Proceeded overseas to France, 13 March 1917; joined 21st Bn, 24 March 1917.

Wounded in action, 3 May 1917 (gun shot wound, left arm and cheek: severe), and admitted to hospital (no details recorded); transferred to England, 19 May 1917, and admitted to 2nd Southern General Hospital, Bristol, 21 May 1917; transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 13 September 1917.
