Military Medal 'At daylight on the 20th June, 1918, near STRAZEELE, the enemy were seen to carry a Machine Gun into a shelter 25 yards from our posts. Lance Corporal MILLER, with Private VANCE, crawled out and succeeded in reaching the shelter and throwing a bomb in, though under persistent fire from snipers, they succeeded in capturing a Machine Gun and two prisoners. His courage and devotion to duty was of the highest.

War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Tried by Field General Court Martial, 27 June 1916. Found Guilty of when on active service disobeying a lawful command: sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour, reduced to 90 days' Field Punishment No 1. Wounded in action, 23 July 1916 (gun shot wound, left foot). Admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford; discharged, 30 July 1917; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 26 days. Found Guilty by District Court Martial, Longbridge Deverill, 25 February 1918, of being Absent without Leave, 29 January-12 February 1918: sentenced to 30 days' detention. Wounded in action (second occasion), 20 July 1918 (gun shot wound, left thigh and buttock). Declared illegal absentee as from 10 January 1919. Tried by District Court Martial, Sutton Veny, 19 May 1919.Found Guilty; sentenced to 5 months' imprisonment; 3 months remitted, 26 May 1919. Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Zealandic', 27 March 1920; discharged (termination of period of enlistment), Adelaide, 3 July 1920.
