'In the attack on POLYGON WOOD, east of YPRES, on 20/21st September, 1917, Cpl. PHILLIPS showed great courae and steadiness when his Company was heavily shelled in the assembly position. He materially assisted to reorganise the Company and did valuable liaison work with neighbouring units. During the advance he did excellent work in maintaining the organisation of his platoon and again after the objective was gained he showed great courage under hostile artillery fire in gaining and maintaining liaison with flanking units and in directing the consolidation of the position. His conduct throughout was a splendid example to his comrades.'
