Military Medal 'During the attack on VAUVILLES on 9th August 1918 this soldier displayed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. His Platoon Sergeant had his leg shattered by shell fire and was lying out in the open bleeding badly. Private BLAKE immediately volunteered to go out to his Sergeant's assistance. In spite of heavy Machine Gun fire he succeeded in reaching the N.C.O. dressing his wounds and stopping the bleeding, thus undoubtedly saving the Sergeant's life. He then carried him to a place of safety, but owing to concentrated Machine Gun fire at practically point blank range he was unable to regain our trench and remained with the Sergeant until the stretcher bearers were able to move him some time later. Private BLAKE proved himself absolutely fearless in the face of the most galling fire and gave a splendid example of soldierly behaviour and self sacrifice.'
