War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 5 April 1915. Promoted Corporal, 9 May 1915. Admitted to No 2 Field Ambulance Dressing Station, 13 August 1915 (septic knee), and transferred same day to Casualty Clearing Station, and then to Mudros; to Gibraltar, 7 October 1915, and admitted to General Hospital, 15 October 1915 (enteritis); to England, and admitted to 2nd Southern General Hospital, Bristol, 31 October 1915. Found guilty, 23 May 1916, of overstaying leave from midnight, 21 May, to 1 pm, 22 May 1916: admonished, and forfeited 1 day's pay. Proceeded overseas to France, 25 July 1916. Admitted to 20th General Hospital, Camiers, 25 August 1916; marched in to 1st Australian Division Base Depot, Etaples, from hospital, 29 August 1916; joined 6th Bn, in the field, 20 September 1916. Admitted to NZ Stationary Hospital, Amiens, 17 March 1917 (gonorrhoea); transferred to Ambulance Train, 5 April 1917, and admitted to 51st General Hospital, Etaples, 8 April 1917; discharged to Base Details to duty, 12 June 1917; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 88 days; rejoined Bn, 26 August 1917. Tried by Field General Court Martial, Rouelles, 8 October 1917, on charges (1) in that he was absent without leave from 1st ADBD from 9.30 pm, 2-10-17, to 6.45 am, 3-10-17; (2) conduct to the prejudice of good order and Military discipline in that he at about 6.45 am, 3-10-17, when questioned by Military Police did give a false name & number: pleaded 'Guilty'; found 'Guilty': sentenced to be reduced to the ranks and awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 1; forfeited a total of 30 days' pay. Proceeded to England, 21 November 1917 (eye specialist report); marched in to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 22 November 1917, and attached to War Chest, London, for duty. Found guilty, London, 14 January 1918, of being absent without leave from 9 pm, 12 January, till 10 am, 14 January 1918: forfeited 2 days' pay; total forfeiture: 4 days' pay. Marched in to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 17 January 1918. Taken on strength, AIF Kit Store, 5 February 1918. Retransferred to 6th Bn from Kit Stores, 27 September 1918.
