'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the advance WEST of BELLENGLISE on the 18th September, 1918 he greatly assisted in rushing a strong enemy post where many prisoners were taken. After putting up a determined fight. he took command of a lewis gun section after the leader became a casualty and handled them skilfully during the remainder of the action. Though buried by a shell and slightly wounded he refused to leave his platoon and continued although suffering considerably.'
