Distinguished Conduct Medal

'At Morlancourt, on the night of 29 July, 1918, when a platoon was held up by an enemy machine gun post, he most gallantly rushed the post, and personally killed several of the enemy. Later in the day his company found itself almost out of ammunition, and he, with three men, went back and collected 6,000 rounds, and in broad daylight, and under heavy machine gun fire, safely delivered the ammunition to the front line troops. Throughout the whole operations he set a splendid example of courage and untiring devotion to duty.'
