Military Medal

'On 4th October 1917, East of YPRES, he displayed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in action. This N.C.O. had charge of a Platoon and handled it excellently. He led his men forward under very heavy fire from Machine Guns and took his final objective displaying great coolness and courage. He set a fine example throughout. On one occasion, he went alone into the middle of the barrage area to dig out a buried Officer.'

Bar to Military Medal

'On 12th October 1917, East of YPRES, he displayed conspicuous Gallantry and devotion to duty in action. This N.C.O. displayed great coolness and determination in an attack against an enemy Pill-box, from which the enemy were directing Machine Gun fire. He succeeded in capturing the Pill-box, largely owing to his own personal valour. In the work of consolidation, he gave invaluable assistance and his courage was a splendid example to his men.'
