'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When a Lewis gun team became casualties, this man picked up the gun, and, rushing out 20 yards in front of the position, fired it, killing 15 of the enemy and dispersing them . He remained there for twelve hours preventing the line from being rushed.'
