Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and energy during the attack on Peronne, 1 September, 1918. By his cool judgment and cheerfulness he inspired confidence and kept his company well organized. On 2 September all his officers became casualties; he assumed command, and, in the face of very heavy machine gun fire, dug in a defensive position and maintained the line.'

Lance Sergeant STEWART worked without rest throughout the night under very heavy rifle and machine gun fire. Although he had had no sleep since the fight commenced, Sergeant STEWART in broad daylight at 7.30 a.m. on 21st July, on hearing that two more men were still out in "NO MAN'S LAND" near a crater, immediately went out under heavy fire and brought the men in. By his fine leadership he was largely responsible for maintaining the high spirits of the men and bringing forth volunteers later.'
