'During the attack east of MONT ST. QUENTIN near PERONNE on 2nd September 1918, this signaller crawled out under most severe machine gun fire, and established communication by phone with an isolated post. Although gassed, he for many hours maintained the lines between his Battalion and Companies, being all this time under heavy artillery and machine gun fire.'
