Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When all communications were interrupted, he went back mending the line in six places, and delivered a message to battalion headquarters. He then went forward mending the line, which had again been broken. Later, he volunteered to take a message over 200 yards of open ground swept by machine gun fire, and, although wounded several times, struggled on and delivered his message.'
