Military Medal

'At LAGNICOURT, FRANCE on 15th April 1917, L/Cpl. VARCIN who was in charge of a Lewis Gun team showed himself to be a leader of exceptional quality and courage. He brought his gun into play under heavy machine gun and rifle fire causing heavy losses to the enemy. He pushed his gun forward into prominent positions in full view of the enemy to obtain a better field of fire and gave covering fire to our troops. He was the first man to reach our original outpost lines where he again played havoc with the retiring enemy. His coolness and initiative were most marked.'
