Military Medal

'During the operations of 29th. September in the vicinity of NAUROY an enemy battery was holding up the advance of the Battalion and inflicting many casualties. With L/Cpl. CLARKE and Pte McCORMACK, as a Lewis Gun team, he advanced and engaged the battery, putting it out of action, and enabled the advance to proceed. His courage and coolness throughout the whole operations set a fine example, and were a source of inspiration to his comrades.'

War service: transferred to 52nd Bn from 41st Bn, England, 9 September 1916, and proceeded oversas to France. To hospital (scalded feet), 23 December 1916; evacuated to England, 8 February 1917, and admitted to Norfolk War Hospital, Norwich. Taken on strength, 69th Bn, 24 April 1917; transferred to 31st Bn, 19 September 1917. Arrested, 26 September 1917, on a civil charge of stealing approx. 4 lbs of apples; pleaded not guilty. Found guilty, 2 November 1917; sentenced to 1 day's detention; period under charge: 37 days; total forfeiture of pay: 38 days.

Proceeded overseas to France, 19 December 1917. Taken on strength, 31st Bn, 25 December 1917. Awarded Military Medal.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Port Melbourne, 5 July 1919; disembarked 22 August 1919; died before discharge.

Accidentally killed while leaving the train at his home town, Owanyilla, Queensland, 25 August 1919.
