Military Medal 'On the BRAY CORBIE Road north of SAILLY LAURETTE on night 17th/18th April, 1918, this man, a lewis gunner, showed great courage and devotion to duty, in that he with his gun covered the exposed flank of a raiding patrol, and prevented the enemy from cutting off the patrol returning to the gap cut in the wire, after securing prisoners. He remained behind and covered the withdrawal, being the last to leave, and was under machine gun fire practically the whole time. His initiative and skilful handling of his gun was a big factor in the success of the enterprise. Private WHANNEL indeed displayed great bravery in the face of danger and set a very fine example to all his comrades. It was without doubt greatly due to his personal courage that the withdrawal of our patrol was so successfully carried out without sustaining any casualties.'
