'At POZIERES, FRANCE, on 17th. August 1916, after every runner had been either killed or wounded Private WHEELER volunteered for the duty and carried messages through enemy barrage from forward line to Company Headquartters, working continuously for over 18 hours. On one occasion during prolonged intense bombardment he went through 8 times, covering ground on each occasion where several of his comrades had either been killed or wounded.'
