'During the advance on the 18th September, 1918, near LE VERGUIER, Private WICKS displayed exceptional courage and resource. His Platoon had to cross a very heavily shelled area and in doing so all the N.C.Os became casualties. Considerable confusion occurred and the men became unsteady. However, WICKS setting a fine example of coolness despite the heavy shell fire reorganised the men and led them to the final objective. His gallant action was most opportune as it came at a critical time.'
