'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the period under review this N.C.O. has rendered good service and has set a very high example to all round him of courage under fire and cheerful devotion to duty under all circumstances. On one occasion, when both wounded and gassed, he continued to fight his gun with determined gallantry and self sacrifice.'
