Taken on strength, 5th Pioneer Bn, Ferry Post, Egypt, 17 April 1916.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 25 June 1916.

Wounded in action, 19 January 1917, and admitted to 60th Field Ambulance (gun shot wound, right buttock), and transferred same day to 24th Casualty Clearing Station; to Ambulance train, 20 January 1917, and admitted to 11th Stationary Hospital, Rouen, 21 July 1917. Embarked for England, 23 January 1917, and admitted to 1st London General Hospital, Camberwell, 24 January 1917. Transferred to Grove Hill Military Hospital, Tooting, 26 March 1917. Found guilty, Grove Hill, 29 May 1917, of conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline when a patient in hospital he was absent without leave from 7 pm until 10 pm, 29 May 1917: awarded forfeiture of 1 day's pay. Transfererd to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 20 June 1917. Discharged on furlough, 5 July 1917, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 19 July 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Ulysses', 13 November 1917; disembarked, Melbourne, 13 November 1917; discharged, Melbourne (medically unfit), 2 January 1918.
