Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the 16th October, 1917, near BROODSEINDE. Private WITHERS was employed carrying messages from Battalion Headquarters to the front line often through heavy shell fire and over extremely boggy ground covered by shell holes. He suffered very much from the effects of the shelling but remained on duty. In addition to his duty as a runner he acted as a guide to carrying parties and it was through his untiring efforts that it became possible to keep up the supply of rations and stores to his Unit in the front line. Private WITHERS was again responsible for similar gallant acts on the 22nd October, 1917.'
