'On the 7th June, 1917, during operations south of MESSINES for gallant conduct and skill during the assault. This N.C.O. assisted another N.C.O. in the capture of a strong hostile party by engaging the party with rifle fire, while his comrade worked round the flank. He personally shot two of the enemy whilst under heavy fire from the party. During the following days he set a wonderful example to his men by his coolness and devotion to duty.'
