'During the operations at Villers-Bretonneux on 24/25th April, 1918, this N.C.O. showed great dash and courage, in the face of exceptionally heavt machine-gun fire, by rushing forward with his Lewis gun and engaging at close quarters a hostile gun which was inflicting heavy casualties upon us. He succeeded in silencing the gun and enabling our line to advance.'
