'On 12th October 1917, East of YPRES, he displayed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in action. This soldier was a Runner carrying despatches to and from the front line. Although wounded twice on the morning of the 12th, he carried out his duties courageously under heavy fire until the Battalion was relieved on the following night. He set a splendid example in every way.'
