'Near WARNETON, during a raid on the enemy, on the night 30th November/1st December 1917, this Non-commissioned Officer showed great coolness and courage. He led the party to the point of entry into the enemy trenches, and then under heavy fire while the raid was in progress he laid a tape to our own trenches to direct the raiding party back again. Prior to the raid he did valuable reconnaissance work in preparation for it. Strength of raiding party - 4 officers and 82 Other Ranks.'
