Military Medal 'Near CLERY-sur-SOMME on the 30th August 1918, this soldier set a splendid example of initiative and courage in the use of his Lewis gun. During the advance he kept moving his gun forward to new positions and providing covering fire for the advancing troops. he was one of the first to reach an enemy strong point and materially assisted in its capture by inflicting numerous casualties. When the final objective was taken, being unable to get sufficient field of fire in the prone position to provide covering fire for the consolidating troops, Private COX immediately stood up and under heavy Machine Gun and Rifle fire from the enemy fired his Lewis Gun from his shoulder. He inflicted sever loss on the enemy and thus allowed our men to consolidate without casualties. He showed wonderful coolness and disregard for danger and by his tactical ability and devotion to duty on numerous occasions greatly assisted his company in the advance.'
