'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack. He was artillery forward observer, and went forward with the first wave of the infantry to the final objective, where he gave great assistance in re-organizing the infantry and consolidating the position. He also sent valuable information back to his headquarters, and throughout the day did valuable work in directing and supporting the artillery fire. His courage, energy, and ability were of great service.'
