War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Tried by District Court Martial, 11 October 1917, on charge of when on Active service deserting His Majesty's Service in that he in London on 10.3.17 remained absent without leave until apprehended in London on 26.9.17: awarded 18 months' detention, and forfeited 762 days' pay. Declared an illegal absentee from the night of 6-7 June 1918; apprehended, 15 August 1918. Tried by District Court Martial, 21 August 1919, on charge of when on Active Service in France, deserting His Majesty's Service in that he was absent without leave from 7 June 1918 until surrendering to the Military Police, London, 15 August 1918: awarded 18 monts' imprisonment with hard labour. Marched out to Pentonville Prison, 23 August 1919. Commenced return to Australia, 18 December 1919, to serve remainder of sentence; discharged from AIF (services no longer required), Melbourne, 5 March 1920; released from Military imprisonment (Pentridge), 29 June 1920. War medals: not eligible. |
