'During the operations east of YPRES on 20th September 1917, Pte. EVANS as a runner on Headquarters Signallers Section at all ttimes displayed great courage and devotion to duty whenever it was necessary to use runners to get in touch with the forward companies. As a guide over torn country on the darkest of nights he was invaluable and always ready, regardless of enemy shelling, to move out in response to an order. His disregard of self, his devotion to duty won the admiration of all who came into contact with him.'
