Appointed acting Lance Corporal, 16 April 1917; reverted to rank of Private at own request, 2 July 1917. Embarked from Adelaide, 23 June 1917. Absent from embarkation on board HMT 'Osterley' from Cape Town, South Africa, 18 August 1917; remained absent until apprehended in civilian clothes by Military Police on 6 September 1917: awarded 48 days' forfeiture of pay. Admitted to hospital with venereal disease, Cape Town, 7 September 1917; discharged, 20 September 1917. Absent without leave from his ward, No. 1 General Hospital, Wynberg, 2030 hrs, 28 September, to 0735 hrs, 29 September. Awarded total forfeiture of 8 days' pay. Posted as a deserter, 5 October 1917. Declared not eligible to receive War Medals. Discharged, 21 July 1920, on account of being illegally absent from 5 October 1917 to 21 July 1920. Whereabouts subsequently unable to be determined.
